General Safety Guidelines

The I-SWEEEP adheres to all federal regulations and standards to ensure the safety and welfare of both the researcher and the subjects involved in the project. Be sure to thoroughly research your scientific concept to understand any danger involved prior to performing your project.
  1. Human subjects cannot be used as a part of research/experiment/study. (Surveys/questionnaires are not allowed as well.)
  2. Live vertebrate animals may not be used for experimental purposes. Such animals may be used only for observational purposes.
  3. The use of human or animal fresh/frozen tissues is not allowed.
  4. Experiments or demonstrations with human blood/body part and fluids may not be conducted.
  5. The use of potentially hazardous microorganisms is allowed under the conditions and rules that follow. Research determined to be at Biosafety Level 1(BSL-1) may be conducted under the supervision of project sponsor. The student must be properly trained in standard microbiological practices. Studies involving higher level of biological contamination risk are prohibited. More information can be obtained at http://www.cdc.gov/biosafety/publications/bmbl5/index.htm
  6. Chemicals can be used under the supervision of project sponsor (teacher, scientist or a qualified professional). Both students and supervisors should read and follow instructions on MSDS sheets for each chemical. In addition, the rules for handling, storage and disposal of these chemicals that can be found in the MSDS's must be followed. Free access to MSDS's can be found at http://www.msdsonline.com
  7. Live ammunition, firearms, or acutely dangerous explosives may not be used. Commercially available fireworks and blasting caps shall never be employed.
  8. Plants with poisonous oils (e.g., poison ivy), saps (e.g., oleander) or other plants known to be generally toxic to humans are not to be used.
  9. Radioactive powders, liquids, or solutions are not to be used except in a laboratory facility designated for the type of radioactive material. Arrange for proper shielding and protection for demonstrations which involve radiation. Only low-level, radioactive sources shall be employed.
  10. Do not taste any non food substance or food substance that has been subjected to possible contamination.
  11. Dress safely during experimentation (e.g., gloves, eye protection, an apron, ear protection, safety shield, etc.).
  12. Comply with all local fire and safety rules and regulations; Use caution when heating all forms of matter; always have a fire extinguisher available
